Summary:

Sarah Wilson’s book, “First We Make the Beast Beautiful,” is a witty and insightful exploration of the oft-misunderstood beast we all know as anxiety.  Told with a unique blend of humor, vulnerability, and wisdom, Wilson takes us on a rollercoaster ride through her own wild, anxiety-ridden experiences, turning what can be a daunting topic into an adventurous quest for understanding anxiety and ultimately, understanding one’s self.

My take-away:

“First We Make the Beast Beautiful” is not a conventional self-help book; it’s more like a self-discovery adventure with a guide who knows the terrain intimately. Anybody who has ever experienced anxiety ( I’m raising my hand) often looks at it like a dreaded state that we need to tame into submission or preferably get rid of STAT! However, suppression never works and research backs up a self- compassionate route of understanding and befriending anxiety or “first, making the beast beautiful” as a more effective way of navigating it.
